When you’re live hand engraving yo-yos for the cast and crew of a major streaming series, precision matters—but so does the experience. Picture this: a rooftop transformed into an outdoor Las Vegas haven – poker tables and all – on the rooftop of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.

I was brought in as a second hand engraver to provide live event engraving for this special, invite-only activation to personalize yo-yos. Here’s how and why live engraving transforms high-profile events like TV show premieres — and what it takes to execute it seamlessly.

What Is Live Hand Engraving for TV Premieres?

A separate post will be made on this topic, but in short, live hand engraving is an amazing way to bring personalization opportunities as an activation for your event. I use a small, battery operated drill with several different types of circular diamond burrs to strategically and elegantly etch an item’s surface. If I am working on plastics or metals, I use a slower RPM; and if the item is glass, I’ll go higher.

I have been brought in by many brands and companies (Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Hulu, and Apple Music to name a few) to add personalization to various items, like these yo-yos. Hand engraving is a fast growing trend as it brings a higher level of detail and artistry than another type of activation may.

Hand Engraving Yo-Yos for the Cast and Crew

We were easily the busiest activation of the night as we had to shut down a couple times in order to catch up with the amount of personalization requests we had. However, we we’re still able to complete one for every single person who wanted one.

This was an amazing, immersive, and interactive brand activation. The design of this event was like actually walking onto a movie or show set in Las Vegas. No detail was missed. Even for our station, they had us at metal desks with rotary-type phones and had our yo-yos stashed secretly away in the desk drawers.

The yo-yos played homage to the Vegas setting the new season takes place in. They were branded on one side with the Fallout logo; and the other side was ours to personalize. Anyone who attended the event could get one.

This event was also no different when attendees asked for more than one engraved yo-yo. In order to ensure that every attendee who wanted one could get one, we had to limit it to one per person. Then, towards the end of the night we were able to open it up to multiple. So many people came back for another. Initial proof of a successful activation and we had just gotten started!

The thing about these yo-yos is that they were different than the samples we received to test on. But as a professional hand engraver, I can pivot and troubleshoot on-site when needed. The sampled yo-yos were made of really thin plastic that was hard to engrave cleanly. You need to use a very light hand when engraving plastic to ensure an even etch. With the at-home samples, I would have to peel off some of the excess engraving shavings which I knew would take some time on site to do.

Fortunately, the yo-yos on site were of much thicker plastic and engraved much smoother. No harsh lines or excess shavings to worry about! It allowed us to move quicker through the engravings and ensure each one was smooth and beautiful.

Why Live Hand Engraving Elevates TV Premiere Activations

1. Personalization Creates Emotional Impact

Guests don’t just receive merchandise — they receive something made specially for them as a keepsake and memento of the night. In this case, it unites the cast and crew together as everyone received the same yo-yo (with the Fallout logo), but was able to personalize it in a way that spoke to them. Some people chose special dates that related to the day they found out they originally got their role, while others chose their character names!

2. It Encourages Interaction

Live engraving becomes a focal point, drawing guests into the activation. Since we had a non-stop line, people were curious what the hype was about and got in line without even knowing what they were waiting for! We had many people come up to us and say “Oh my gosh! I didn’t know this was what the line was for, but this is better than I imagined!” They were engaged, loved watching the process, and were so excited to receive their finished items.

3. It Adds Craftsmanship to High-Production Events

In a digital world, hand engraving feels intentional and elevated. Seeing true artistry being done right in front of you is such a cool way to immerse your guests and clients in something different.

4. It Extends the Experience Beyond the Event

Guests leave with something permanent and memorable. For this particular event being a TV show premiere, the cast and crew wanted something that would remind them of their experiences being on set, filming scenes, and enjoying a successful season and launch.

Collaborating as a Second Hand Engraver for a Major Premiere

With a high-profile guest list and a steady flow of attendees, efficiency and precision were essential. Having two engravers ensured the experience remained smooth while maintaining craftsmanship. I was brought in by a fellow calligrapher – Toneylynn of Darling Daydream. We’ve collaborated before, and live really close so carpooling is easy. But, our team dynamic is tried and true from all the events we’ve done together. We value that community over competition and ultimately want to ensure a successful activation.

Being a second calligrapher just means I was asked by Toneylynn to be her secondary artist on site. We have worked together previously and decided having two artists and one assistant would be ideal to ensure a successful hand engraving event. Luckily the client had it handled with regards to guest flow by having two separate desks to ensure we each had enough space. Toneylynn and I are also opposite-handed so we always work together to ensure comfortability.

Lastly, having two engravers and an assistant ensured precision under the time constraint. We had 3 hours to engrave for about 300 guests. When you add in the yo-yos being a plastic material and having to add a color in-lay, we definitely had to be strategic and efficient with our we wanted the process to be executed.

We estimated that about 250 guests received custom hand engraved yo-yos by us in that 3 hours timespan. Our assistant helped us with the color in-lay so that we could focus on the work and entertaining the guests.

If you’re planning a tv or movie premiere, product launch, or social event and want a personalized experience your guests won’t forget, live hand engraving creates an unforgettable touchpoint and keepsake. Live event engraving transforms brand activations from transactional to memorable, and that ROI doesn’t lie. When guests leave with something personalized in real time, the experience becomes tangible.

My live engraving adds a tactile, elevated experience that increases guest engagement and memorability. I guarantee my services will be talked about long after the event ends. Ready to get the conversation going? I can’t wait to see what you have planned!
