Live Event Engraving for Brand Activations: Inside the Amazon Prime Fallout Season 2 Premiere

When you’re hand engraving yo-yos for the cast and crew of a major streaming series, precision matters—but so does the experience. Picture this: a rooftop transformed into an outdoor Las Vegas haven – poker tables and all – in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles.

I was brought in as a second engraver to provide live event engraving for this special, invite-only brand activation to personalize yo-yos. Here’s how and why live engraving transforms high-profile events — and what it takes to execute it seamlessly.

What Is Live Hand Engraving for Brand Activations?

Live Hand Engraving is an amazing way to bring personalization opportunities to your brand activation or event. I use a small, battery operated drill with several different types of circular diamond burrs. It’s small and portable which allows me to set up my station anywhere.

I have been brought in by brands to add personalization their own brand’s items, promotional items (like these yo-yos!), and gift with purchase products, just as examples. Brands want on-site engraving experiences at their events to bring a higher level of detail and awe than a typical laser engraver does.

Engraving Custom Yo-Yos for the Fallout Cast and Crew

We were easily the busiest activation of the night as we had to shut down a couple times in order to catch up with the amount of personalization requests we had. However, we we’re still able to complete one for every single person who wanted one.

This was an amazing, immersive, and interactive brand activation. The design of this event was like actually walking onto a movie or show set. No detail was missed. Even for our station, they had us at metal desks with rotary-type phones and had our yo-yos stashed secretly away in the desk drawers.

The yo-yos played homage to the Vegas setting the new season takes place in. They were branded on one side with the Fallout logo; and the other side was our side to personalize. Anyone who attended the event could get one.

This event was also no different when attendees asked for more than one engraved yo-yo. In order to ensure that every attendee who wanted one could get one, we had to limit it to one per person. Then, towards the end of the night we were able to open it up to multiple. So many people came back for another.

The thing about these yo-yos is that they were different than the samples we received to test on. But as a professional hand engraver, I can pivot and troubleshoot on-site when needed.

The yo-yos we received initially were made of really thin plastic that was hard to engrave cleanly. You need to use a very light hand when engraving plastic to ensure an even and clean etch. With the at-home samples, I would have to peel off some of the excess engraving shavings which I knew would take some time on site to do.

Fortunately, the yo-yos on site were of much thicker plastic and engraved much smoother. No harsh lines or excess shavings to worry about! It allowed us to move quicker through the engravings to ensure that every one who wanted one, got it!

Why Live Engraving Elevates Brand Activations

1. Personalization Creates Emotional Impact

Guests don’t just receive merchandise — they receive something made for them. It unites the cast and crew together as everyone received the same yo-yo (with the Fallout logo), but got to personalize it in a way that spoke to them. Some people chose special dates that related to the day they found out they originally got their role. Others chose their character names or their own!

2. It Encourages Interaction

Live engraving becomes a focal point, drawing guests into the activation.

3. It Adds Craftsmanship to High-Production Events

In a digital world, hand engraving feels intentional and elevated.

4. It Extends the Brand Experience Beyond the Event

Guests leave with something permanent.
